CHAPTER 1: DUST ON THE BOOTS The kitchen floor felt too solid beneath my boots, missing the rolling pitch of a transport truck. A stranger stood by the stove flipping eggs in my dead grandmother’s old iron skillet. A man with his ankles crossed rested his sneakers directly on the arm of my living room […]
CHAPTER 1: THE MORNING VISIT The silence on the four-acre patch wasn’t peaceful that morning. It carried the thick, humming weight of an engine idling just out of sight. I stood barefoot on the gravel drive with an old fire and rescue sweatshirt pulled over my shoulders, steam curling faintly from my coffee mug. My […]
CHAPTER 1: Midnight Arrival The metal of my boot crunched down on fresh, damp soil where my living room used to be, the scent of wet mulch hanging heavy in the 3:00 a.m. air. I stood there in full dress blues, the sand from three continents still ground deep into the treads, staring at a […]
CHAPTER 1: THE PADLOCK NOTICE The rain ran down my face, but I barely felt it. My boots stayed glued to the wet gravel of my father’s driveway. That padlock mocked everything he had built with his own two hands. I shifted the heavy brass plumb bob inside my coat pocket, letting the cold metal […]
CHAPTER 1: THE DUMPSTER DISCOVERY The Prairie Star Travel Mart reeked of burnt chicory coffee and diesel exhaust. Outside, forty miles west of Sundown Junction, the North Dakota wind drove snow flat across the gravel lot, rattling the aluminum frame of the ice ice-vending machine. Atlas Monroe rolled the rough flint wheel of his brass […]
CHAPTER 1: ALTITUDE AND IRON The heavy brass buckle of the flak suit bit cold against Alan McGee’s ribs. He didn’t waste breath cursing the chill. CHAPTER 1: THE AMBER TUMBLER The ice cube shifted against the rim of the glass with a faint, hollow click. Gordon kept his eyes locked on the dark amber liquid, watching the condensation carve a slow trail down the scarred wood of the bar. “You sure you’re in the right place, old-timer?” The voice was […]
CHAPTER 1: The Mess Hall Intrusion “Hey Pop, what was your rank back in the Stone Age? Mess cook, third class?” The voice cut through the low, industrial hum of the Coronado dining facility with the slick, unearned confidence of peak physical conditioning. Petty Officer Miller stood with two of his teammates, their trays loaded […]
CHAPTER 1: THE MORNING ROUTINE The soil of the Coronado flower bed was stubborn and dry beneath the midday California glare. Frank Nelson knelt in his faded work shirt, his gnarled hands gently patting earth around a fresh cluster of marigolds. He didn’t look up when the sharp voice sliced through the placid air. “You […]
