CHAPTER 1: THE ASH OF PEACETIME The flagstone path felt brittle beneath the soles of my boots, every footstep echoing with an unnatural sharpness against the perimeter walls of the yard. I did not drop to my knees. A Marine does not panic when the perimeter is breached; he assesses the damage, calculates the vector, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE IRON FRAME The rusted lattice of the windmill caught the pale morning light, casting long, geometric shadows across the dew-soaked grass. I kept my hand resting against the weathered steel leg, feeling the faint, rhythmic vibration of the gears turning high above. It was a familiar pulse, steady and unhurried, marking the […]
CHAPTER 1: The Iron Chain and the Dusty Road The morning sun beat down through the Carolina pines, turning the red dust on the county road into a fine, choking haze. I stood twenty feet from my own property line, holding a set of keys that suddenly possessed all the utility of smooth river stones. […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF A BEIGE PANT SUIT The words slid out of Karen Miller’s mouth with a polished, synthetic certainty that tasted like copper in the back of the throat. She stood right on the immaculate line where Kentucky bluegrass met wild clover, a stout silhouette encased in a beige pants suit that […]
CHAPTER 1: THE ASHES OF THE HARVEST The red jewels of the morning’s labor lay ruined across the acreage, a sticky crimson carpet baking under a merciless sky. Marcus Thorne did not look down at the spoiled fruit. His gaze remained locked on the beige-suited silhouette standing by the whitewashed property line, her arms folded […]
CHAPTER 1: THE CLUBHOUSE VERDICT The air inside the Oakwood Preserve community clubhouse smelled faintly of stale carpet cleaner and the artificial pine of an unplugged air freshener. CHAPTER 1: THE INCURSION The structure had to go, and Jack Miller would pay a ten-thousand-dollar fine for erecting it without approval. Jack stood on his own porch, a ceramic mug of rapidly cooling black coffee cradled in his hand, staring down at the woman planted squarely on his lawn as if she owned the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE ACCREDITED BORDER The pile of sawdust sat on the gravel edge like a grey, compressed lung, exhaling the sharp, tannic bite of freshly planed Douglas fir. Jack did not move his hand from the throttle lever of the idling flatbed. He watched the woman’s floral print mumu ripple against the frame of […]
CHAPTER 1: THE LINE IN THE MUD The silence of the creek was broken only by the dry, rasping rub of synthetic fabric against skin. Karen adjusted her stance, her heels sinking an eighth of an inch into the chemical perfection of her manicured lawn. Her gaze was fixed not on me, but on the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE WEIGHT OF STEEL The air in the room was processed, sterile, and entirely devoid of the scent of earth or rain. It was the air of a tomb, or a court—whichever one decided to claim her first. Mara sat with her hands flat against the cold steel of the table, her palms […]
