CHAPTER 1: THE EDGE OF THE PIT The chain-link fence vibrated under Bobby Kendrick’s calloused palms, a low, mechanical hum that tasted faintly of salt air and diesel exhaust. The wire was cold despite the midday heat, its galvanized coating long since worn down to gray zinc. Inside the pit, the young Marines moved with […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FROZEN BRICK The concrete didn’t give. It took the skin off my knees right through the threadbare denim of the men’s extra-large hoodie, but I didn’t have the fat reserves to cushion the impact anyway. Thirty pairs of clean leather winter boots formed a neat, unbroken ring around the girl in the […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FROZEN PERIPHERY The wind off the Detroit River carried the taste of salt and industrial exhaust, dry and sharp enough to coat the throat in gray grit. Beneath the skeletal branches of Elmwood Cemetery’s ancient oaks, the frost had turned the dirt to iron. Mia Carter kept her right foot flat, pressing […]
CHAPTER 1: THE REJECTED WEIGHT The canvas of his sneakers didn’t just leak; it whistled. Every down-step on the salt-pitted linoleum produced a damp, rhythmic squeak that died instantly against the heavy smell of burnt oil and stale tobacco rolling off the fryers. Eli Carter Turner didn’t look seven. He looked like something left behind […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD ARCHIVE The radiator in the far corner of the Lakeside Public Library didn’t hiss; it clanked, a rhythmic, iron-on-iron strike that did nothing to shift the frost creeping up the lower pane of the tall sash windows. Elena Rose Bennett didn’t look at the window. She kept her eyes fixed on […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FRICTION OF YOUTH The wood under Mark’s palms was oil-soaked and split down the grain, the kind of cheap pine that absorbed forty years of spilled lager and sour sweat until it became something harder than rock. He didn’t look at the lieutenant. To look at him was to acknowledge the specific, […]
CHAPTER 1: THE FRICTION OF SILK AND NYLON Douglas Ramsay did not look up immediately. He kept his palms resting flat against the cool, rounded head of his cane, his eyes fixed on the empty stage where the golden spotlights were already casting long, geometric shadows across the polished oak floorboards. The auditorium smelled heavily […]
CHAPTER 1: THE STERILE FRICTION The floor buffer vibrated against the palms of Harold Beck’s hands, a heavy, rhythmic pulse that rose through his forearms and settled into the familiar ache of his shoulders. The command and control center smelled of ozone, expensive floor wax, and the artificial, chilled air kept at a constant sixty-five […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD FLUORESCENT BOX The air inside Room 4B smelled of old floor wax, damp coats, and the stale, chalky dust of dried dry-erase ink. It was a thin, artificial atmosphere, dried out by a laboring ventilation system that rattled behind its intake grate with a persistent, metallic wheeze. Roger Clayton sat in […]
CHAPTER 1: THE COLD WEIGHT OF PORCELAIN The salt shaker on booth four had a chipped rim, the glass ground down by thirty years of sliding across scarred Formica. Walter Branson kept his thumb pressed against the rough edge, using the small, localized bite of pain to anchor himself against the hum of the diner’s […]
